1) Wear sunscreen and a hat. Beach cruisers are so comfortable that you may be out riding longer than you imagine, which exposes you to harmful UV rays. A good sunscreen with at least 15 SPF or higher can help you avoid an unpleasant burn. Stop and reapply your sunscreen periodically when you ride.
2) Wear long-sleeved and comfortable clothing that allows you to breathe but is not too loose. On your beach cruiser, when you are out on the trails, especially, long-sleeved clothing can help ensure that you do not get bitten by bugs. If you are riding your beach cruiser bike somewhere with many insects, consider a good insect repellant as well. Long sleeves ensure that your arms and legs stay free of scratches, bites, and sunburns. Just make sure that your clothing is not too loose or it can get caught up in your beach cruiser bicycle gears and can lead to an accident.
3) Wear light-colored clothing. When you are out riding your beach cruiser bike on a hot day, light-colored clothing absorbs less light and allows you to feel cooler. Light clothes also allow you to notice potentially harmful pests such as ticks.
4) Bring water and snacks. Riding beach cruisers is a great low-impact exercise, which means that even if you do not become overly tired, you will need to replenish your body. Once in a while on your ride, hop off your beach cruiser to rest, drink, and eat.
5) On very hot days, bike in the shade and avoid being out riding around lunch time. The two hours before and after lunch have the strongest sun and the highest levels of UV. You will want to avoid riding your beach cruiser in full sun at this time – especially if you are near water. You risk heat stroke and a serious burn. If you have fair skin that burns easily, park your beach cruiser bicycle and stay indoors when the sun’s rays are harshest. Even if you have tough skin, bike in the shade and take frequent breaks.
6) Wear sunglasses. Choose sunglasses that offer UVB and UVA protection and test them to make sure that they allow good visibility while you are riding – you don’t want to crash your beach cruiser because you can’t see properly. Good sunglasses can keep the sun out of your eyes, though, and allow you to ride your beach cruiser bike with greater comfort.
