Beach Cruiser Maintenance 101

Once you have bought a beach cruiser bike, you have made an investment that will keep you slim, active, and smiling for years to come. You can keep your beach cruiser in the best possible shape by:

1) Storing it indoors and treating it correctly. Abusing the bike, smashing it against surfaces while you ride and generally pushing it in ways it was not designed will make your bike age faster. Storing your beach cruiser indoors can help prevent rust and is especially important if you live near the ocean.

2) Check your beach cruiser bike right after every ride. First, check the tires. If the tire pressure is low, add some air. Check the treads for any debris or any objects embedded in the treads. If left there, this could cause a flat. Also, if you notice too much wear and tear, consider taking in your beach cruiser for a replacement tire right away. Letting your tires go soft puts unnecessary pressure on your beach cruiser bicycle and makes your ride less smooth and enjoyable. Once you've checked the tires, check that the wheel nuts are secure and that the quick releases for the seat are tight and secure as well. Check the chain. If your chain looks dry, add some oil or lube to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride.

3) Provide more maintenance and work twice a year. Every six months, check the crank arms, seat bolt, pedals, seatpost bolts, stem bolts, and handlebar bolts using a wrench. Basically, test every bolt and screw to make sure that it is tight and secure. If you have a multi-speed beach cruiser bike, check the cables for any rusting and wear. If you notice any, replace it before the bike’s performance is affected. Also, twice a year you should be lubing the cables, as this prevents bindings and keeps your bike in good repair. Check the spokes on your wheels to ensure that they are not loose. Finally, give the bike a thorough cleaning. Just make sure you dry it off carefully afterwards to prevent rust.

4) Regularly replace your bicycle tires. Beach cruiser bicycle tires are quite porous and eventually the air leaks out and the tire becomes soft. Any sort of accident you have while the tire is soft can permanently damage your beach cruiser bicycle, so replace tires regularly. Also, if you beach cruiser bicycle is looking a little tired itself, consider a new coat of paint or some new accessories to freshen in up.
