Riding Your Beach Cruiser Safely

If you have a beach cruiser, you are fortunate to have one of the most comfortable bikes out there. Just because your beach cruiser bicycle is very comfortable, though, that doesn’t mean that you can forget about safety. Follow these tips to keep your beach cruiser bike comfortable and safe for years to come:

1) Keep your beach well stored when not in use. Make sure that your beach cruiser is stored someplace where excessive moisture is not a problem. Certain parts of beach cruisers -- including the chains -- can rust when exposed to moist air for long periods of time. While beach cruisers are far from being rust prone, if you're storing your bike for an extended period of time, make sure you store it in a dry place. Rust on the chains can make your beach cruiser far less comfortable.

2) Keep your beach cruiser clean. Remove dust, grime, and sand from the chains and gear sprockets, as friction from sand and dirt can prevent a smooth ride. Always dust off your bicycle and make sure that it does not have moisture all over it after ride. This will help ensure that your beach cruiser bike lasts for many, many years.

3) Always lock up your beach cruiser with a good-quality lock. You may want to lock up your tire to the frame of your beach cruiser bike, and you may want to secure the bike frame to the bike rack. This helps ensure that no thieves remove the front tire from your beach cruiser and get away with your entire bike. Even with a proper quality lock, there is no guarantee that your bicycle will not be stolen, but you can greatly discourage thieves.

4) Obey traffic laws when riding your beach cruiser. Beach cruisers, like all bicycles, have to be operated safely. If you are riding your beach cruiser bike along boardwalks or packed sand, be especially careful of pedestrians. Make sure that you are not distracted when on your bicycle, so that you can react correctly if a dangerous situation should arise.

5) Maintain your beach cruiser bicycle by properly lubricating your gears, chain, and seat springs. Lubricating these parts will help ensure a smooth ride, and will make sure that your bicycle lasts as long as possible.
